Our first stop in Michigan was in Mears, right by Silver Lake and the Sand Dunes. I always wanted to see Lake Michigan and the dunes. My parents had talked about spending time up there, and I didn’t realize until after we booked it, that we were staying really close to where they used to go visit. My dad's best friend, Scott, spent a lot of time at a house right on Lake Michigan. My mom and dad and other family members would go there for trips. Flipping through old photos, I remember seeing photos of them on buggies in sand dunes. I couldn’t imagine that it was in Michigan at the time. I only thought of those kind of sand dunes to be in Egypt as a kid.
Anyway, the campground we stayed at was right down the street from Lake Michigan and the Sand Dunes. It was really nice, Dunes Harbor Family Camp. This place was a haven for kids. Had so much to do, very spacious lots, an amazing pool, activities planned throughout the day, and a lake where you could kayak or canoe. Kids were running around playing everywhere. It was nice to see. Truth be told, it made me feel a little awkward not having kids ourselves being there. However, with how nice everything was and the perfect weather, it was worth it.
We were only here two nights during the week, so I was working both days. The first evening we just got settled in and made a fire. We met our neighbors who are from Lansing, MI. They were a very nice family and invited us to go to the Sand dunes with them the next day. Gary has a side by side and his son, Hunter a dirt bike.
I had to work, but Dean went with them and had a lot of fun. Thanks again, guys!! Check out some photos and videos here:
Thursday evening we drove over to Silver Lake and Lake Michigan to see the dunes and beach. Come to find out, we were only about 2 miles from the house that my family used to hang out. I found out where it was located from Scott and we headed out to try and find it. It wasn’t hard to find. Only the 2nd house north from the beautiful lighthouse right on Lake Michigan Beach. We walked around the beach and took some photos. I could just imagine my parents hanging out at that beach when they were younger without a care in the world. I got emotional imagining my mom there carefree, before life got complicated. But I did find some comfort in that, I guess, and felt her near me. After the beach, we found the Chicken Shack where they had live music and a nice outdoor seating area. We had dinner, listened to the music then headed back to our site. We were off to the east side of Michigan the next day.
Ps: My Starlink arrived on this stop! 🙌🏻 Stay tuned for more updates on that.

The next stop was a few hours away, just west of Detroit at Haas Lake . It was a huge campground with multiple lakes. It was busy. We could tell there were a lot of people that have been coming here for years for the 4th weekend. Many people had golf carts and boats. The lakes had nice beach areas you could swim in too. We had a nice spot in the back with an open field. We had nice sunset views for our fires. Friday we got all setup and made pizzas. Saturday night they had a DJ at the club house, so we road our bikes to check that out. Sunday we went into town to run some errands , and Monday on the 4th, we went to the beach and were able to watch fireworks right from our site. The field behind us had people shooting them off. It was a nice, relaxing weekend.
After celebrating USA's Independence Day, it was off to Canada the next morning!
Queue the anthem, “Ohhhhh Cannaaddaa” 😆 🇨🇦
