We spend the last few days in New Mexico and really enjoyed it!
We got in early enough on Wednesday that we were able to head to Sitting Bull Falls. It was about an hour drive down a windy road, in the middle of nowhere ( zero cell service) but was worth it! It was a beautiful falls in the middle of the desert. Who knew? We hiked up and took some pictures. It was a great start to our New Mexico exploring.
Thursday we headed to our first National Park, Carlsbad Caverns. I have to say, when I was looking up this park, it looked cool but it was definitely WAY cooler in person. The pictures just cannot do it justice. You have to see it in person. You have the option take an elevator down or do the natural access and hike down. It is almost 800 feet deep! We elected the hike down. I have pictures and video below and we have some fun facts for you. here:
Carlsbad Fun Facts
Caverns are almost 800 feet deep
Eiffel tower is 1083 feet tall
Temperature inside caves are about 55 degrees, and 95% humidity
The caverns were discovered by a 16 year old cowboy who stumbled across it when he saw a cloud of bats in the sky coming from the cave and thought it was smoke.
The hike down is 1 1/4 mile long
The "Big Room" is over 7 football fields big
Looking up in some areas is over 250 feet tall
200, 000 to 500,000 bats leave the caves nightly 30 minutes before dark
The Elevator to take the 800 feet took 60 seconds to get back to top
Friday we got back on the road. We originally were heading to Cline's Corner but there were high wind warnings, so we changed our route a bit so that we could avoid it. We stopped in Belen, NM for the night then continued on to Gallup, NM. The drive through New Mexico was beautiful!
When we were in Gallup, New Mexico we decided to take the drive up to 4 corners monument. It was about 2 hours away but again, the drive was so pretty so it really didn't seem to take too long. It was pretty cool to see, as it's the only place in the country where 4 states meet together - New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Then, we drove around through Colorado on the way back.
We headed out to Sedona, Arizona on Sunday. Wait until you see some of these pictures. 😍 Will post about Sedona in a few days. Thanks for reading! More updates soon.
